Matching GIFT Donations

Below is some basic information about matching gift donations. If one of your donors has a matching gift donation available for the Police Unity Tour, here is what you need to know.

Some companies matching gift programs may take up to three months to process. This is another example of a time where starting your fundraising early pays off so the matching funds are received before our deadlines and you receive credit for them.

If your donor completes the paperwork with their employer and indicates they donated to Police Unity Tour, the match agency may attempt to verify the donation with Police Unity Tour Inc. (not Police Unity Tour of Florida). In that case, the other chapter would have no record of the original donation so the match would be lost. Make sure your donors are specific and provide our tax ID number (20-1026394).

If you have a question about a matching donation, please do not email Alison. She handles the spreadsheet and most donations, but does not process matching donations. Those are processed by our Treasurer. Please email treasurer@policeunitytourviii.org with the following information:

  • Member Name
  • Date & Amount of original donation
  • Name and web address of the match agency
  • Information/method of providing match verification given to the match agency (this is usually a form your donor completes)

What is a matching gift?

A matching gift is a charitable donation by a corporation that matches an employee’s donation to an eligible nonprofit organization, most often dollar for dollar. Thousands of companies across the United States (and some companies internationally) offer matching gift programs to their employees as part of a corporate giving philanthropy. This means millions of individuals are eligible to participate in a matching gift program. In addition, 65% of Fortune 500 companies offer a matching gift program, and some companies even double, triple, or quadruple donations!

How do matching gift programs work?

The main concept of matching gift programs is quite simple. A $100 donation to your organization is eligible to be matched by a corporate employer, literally doubling the donation for a total of $200. All an individual has to do is fill out the matching gift forms (which can usually be obtained from the Human Resources department or an online portal), and then submit them to the appropriate personnel or intranet site. The employer will validate that the donation was submitted to an eligible nonprofit, and will send a check of the same value (or higher, depending on the parameters of the program) to your organization.
